How to Choose the Right Stanchions for Your Business

Stanchions are used in various environments – from controlling the crowd outside a club or event, to directing traffic in banks or airports. Even though stanchions are easy to cross, they create a visual barrier that indicates no-go areas or directions to a particular location. There are three main groups of stanchions on the market, and they have their own pros and cons. This means that you have to find the stanchions that are most suited to your needs.

  • Post or rope stanchions with metal posts: These are the oldest types of stanchions and often used to portray a more elegant look. They consist of ropes that can be attached to a metal post with hooks. The posts stand on heavy, stable bases to prevent them from falling over, and they are made of different types of metal, such as polished brass, aluminium, or steel. You can choose your own tops for the posts, and there is also a range of connecting ropes to choose from. These are typically used in a situation where elegance and style are important, such as galleries, glamorous events, and upmarket accommodation establishments.
  • Plastic stanchions: These are similar in design to the traditional post and rope stanchions, but the base, the post, and the top are made from a strong type of plastic. They are also attached to plastic ropes that connect with a variety of different loops and hooks to choose from. These are particularly suited to outdoor use because they are weatherproof – they don’t rust like the metal stanchions and the plastic ropes are unaffected by moisture. One of the most notable advantages of plastic stanchions is that they are lightweight, so they can be moved about easily. They are often used in situations where the barrier has to change often, or where it has to be set up and taken down in quick succession.
  • Retractable belt stanchions: These are the most modern type of stanchions. They are commonly used in banks or where crowd direction and control are needed. Instead of a rope, the posts are connected by a retractable belt that hooks into the post. Various lengths of these belts are available, which makes these very practical in situations where a long reach is necessary, and they can be extended or retracted to suit the distance needed between the posts. These are great to use indoors and outdoors.
